What Does โˆ’110 Mean in Betting?

If you've looked at a point spread or totals line, you've almost certainly seen โˆ’110 next to both sides. It's the most common number in American sports betting โ€” and once you understand what it means, a lot of other things click into place.

The short answer

โˆ’110 means you must bet $110 to win $100. If your bet wins, you get back your $110 stake plus $100 in profit โ€” $210 total. If it loses, you're out $110. The number isn't describing a favorite or underdog; it's describing the cost of placing the bet.

Why โˆ’110 and not โˆ’100?

That extra $10 is how the sportsbook makes money. It's called the vig (short for vigorish) or the juice. When both sides of a bet are priced at โˆ’110, the book collects more than it pays out on every game regardless of which side wins.

Here's the math: imagine $110 is bet on each side of a spread โ€” $220 total. The winning side gets back $210 ($110 stake + $100 profit). The sportsbook keeps $10. That $10 is the vig.

What โˆ’110 looks like on a real line

TeamSpreadOddsTo win $100, risk
Chiefsโˆ’3.5โˆ’110$110
Raiders+3.5โˆ’110$110

Both sides cost the same to play. The spread is doing the work of balancing the bet โ€” one team gives points, the other gets them. โˆ’110 just tells you the price on each side.

When does โˆ’110 change?

Sportsbooks move the price when they need to balance action. If too much money is coming in on one side, the book might shift the odds to โˆ’115 or โˆ’120 on that side (making it more expensive) and drop the other to โˆ’105 (making it cheaper). You'll also see lines priced at โˆ’105 or better at reduced-juice books, which is a meaningful long-term edge if you shop lines.

Implied probability of โˆ’110

Every price contains an implied probability โ€” the win percentage you'd need to break even at that price. At โˆ’110, break-even is 52.4%. That means if you bet spreads at โˆ’110 all season, you need to win more than 52.4% of your bets just to stay even. Most recreational bettors don't clear that bar.
